Canada's third party, the New Democratic Party (NDP) just had their election and Avi Lewis won.
He's the son of the late, ambassador to the UN and NDP leader, Stephen Lewis. Although small in numbers, the NDP often determines who will be Canada's PM. It is a far left party, far more so than our Liberal party. The only time we've ever had a Conservative leader like our incredible Stephen Harper, was when the NDP party was strong as it stole votes away from the Liberals giving the Conservatives a chance to win.
David Lewis was Avi's grandfather. He also was the leader of the NDP party. But unlike Avi, David was an unapologetic Zionist. The Lewis family is Jewish. David was born in Poland and was active as a socialist Zionist (Poalei Tzion - in Hebrew) growing up, much like David Ben-Gurion. In other words, he was a Left wing Zionist. A term that barely exists today. In fact most people on the Left, Jewish or not, are against the State of Israel. This fact is a constant, not just in Canada, but throughout the world, even in Israel. In their best case, they might support the existence of Israel but their priorities are typically rooted in socialist ideologies. The more Left you are, the more likely you are to hate Israel and Jews. This was true in communist Russia and it still holds true today.
Let's examine the Lewis family as they seem to typify the often pathetic and dangerous direction that some Jews are heading. David Lewis was a bona fide Zionist. He made supportive comments about Israel publicly and unapologetically. He was clear about where he stood vis a vis Israel. He wanted Israel to succeed and he wanted Canada to support the young Jewish state.
His son, Stephen Lewis made some comments generally supportive of Israel but was not a Zionist. At least he never said that he was publicly nor did any of his actions prove that he was formally a Zionist. I even checked with the AI platform ChatGPT. It confirmed that he was NOT in fact a Zionist.
Which brings us to Avi Lewis, Stephen's son. The latest Lewis to become the leader of the NDP in Canada. Not only is he not a Zionist, he detests Israel and Zionists (like me). He supports Israel's enemies. At his victory speech, his supporters held out a huge Palestinian flag and held signs saying 'Tax the rich' and 'Socialism is the Big Tent'.
As you can see, if you waver in your principles theres a time when your principles get diluted. Case in point, I unequivocally support the US and Israel war against Iran. I want the regime to unconditionally surrender or if not, I want them and their supporters to be eliminated off the face of the earth. I want no more missiles, rockets or drones falling on Israel. I fully support President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu's efforts on winning this war. I refuse to criticize them on any of the small issues that people on both the Right and Left try to bring up at this time. I'm tired of hearing from people on my side complaining that Trump has abandoned the Iranian people, the Kurds and Israel simply because he said that he was negotiating with another member of Iran's regime. Or that he said that the war will be over very soon while Iran was still firing missiles. Have you not figured out Trump yet? He often says things publicly to throw off his enemies. He certainly keeps them (and us) guessing. And he loves to shit disturb (I do as well). Even if you dislike him you must admit that he's entertaining.
So back to the point. If you believe in moral principles, don't waver. Don't let yourself get sidetracked on the many side stories. I believe Avi Lewis became a self hating Jew at least in part, because his father failed to make the case to support Israel and the Jewish people crystal clear. It started there. Later, he was certainly influenced by his very own party to disavow Israel and the Jews who support her.
To my Jewish readers: Chag Pesach Sameach!
To my Christian readers: Happy Easter!
To the rest: Party on!

I believe that the most important influence on Avi Lewis was his mother , long time Toronto Star journalist Michelle Landsberg . She famously described herself as a Post-Zionist Jew . Over many years ( 25 year career at the Star and stints at the Globe & Mail as well as many freelance articles during her time in NYC as the Canadian Ambassador’s wife at the UN ) , she became increasingly hostile to Israel . It was during the UN Durban conference in 2002 that the International Left influenced by Western Socialist like Stephen Lewis & Michelle ( Avi’s parents ) took a hard turn against Zionism & Israel that has lasted and increased until today .
Thanks for that nugget Zulubaby! I neglected to talk about his mom's influence. She definitely had one and it wasn't good.
A very good article however I think there must be a disclaimer regarding what sort of Zionist a person is; Labor Zionist (Socialist), Jewish Nationalist or a Religious Zionist.
My point is that Socialism is a mental cancer. May well be a strong supporter of a Socialist Israel however Socialism and Israel are in base opposition.
May Israel finally wake up and take their lands while expelling their Islamic population...
Amen to that
